  • On the Road Again

Well, nothing tonight but a couple of links as I’m currently packing for a company get-away to San Antonio. Blogging this weekend will be unpredictable.

First and foremost, I’m spending my breaks from packing reading the latest posting from Michael Yon on the ground in Iraq, Gates of Fire. It’s lengthy and, so far and as expected, fascinating. I especially like this early observation:

Although the situation in Mosul is better, our troops still fight here every day. This may not be the war some folks had in mind a few years ago. But once the shooting starts, a plan is just a guess in a party dress.

I’d also like to point that the latest installment of the Life, Liberty, Property community‘s Carnival of Liberty is up over at Searchlight Crusade. Go read another fine collection of posts from a libertarian slant.

Lastly, I wanted to point y’all to a new blogger, the Gunn Nutt. I have to say that I love the “about me” verbage.

Flag-waiving, gun-toting, unabashed patriot. I love the Constitution, the Founding Fathers and all the members of the U.S. Armed Services. I hate Commies more than broccoli.

Commies, broccoli … close call. Broccoli hasn’t killed millions, but if gross was fatal ….

Also, pay attention to the Gunn Nutt’s banner — that tartan is Gunn Modern, and the badge is that of the clan Gunn. The motto Aut Pax Aut Bellum translates to “Either peace or war” and is fitting for the fighting history of the clan. I should say that I’ve grown more partial to the Gunn Ancient version of the tartan, but tastes may vary. I’m looking forward to the Nutt’s blogging next April 6.

  • Nothing Tonight but a Carnival

I’ve got the day off from work tomorrow, and I’m taking the night off from blogging tonight. I may tinker a little with the site later so, if you drop by and things look strange, just bear with me.

In the meantime, feel free to visit Owlish Mutterings for the latest Carnival of Liberty. This carnival showcases the latest selected efforts of the Life, Liberty, Property community.

If that’s not enough reading for you, I recommend visiting any of the fine blogs in my blogroll.

    Later, y’all.

  • Blogroll Update Time Again

If you’ve got any blogs to suggest, please leave them in the comments.

  • Calif. Guard Story and Major K.

It looks like the investigations into some of the deployed California National Guard units, blogged about here last night, has had an impact on TCm blogroll member Major K.

There are many things that I have to post about, but this is the elephant in the room that I must get out of the way. We have apparently found evil in our midst. I cannot comment on the on going investigation save to say that I am disgusted by the actions of a few that have tarnished the good work of so many others. I am not involved in this situation, and for that I am thankful. Morale has taken quite a hit, but the NightStalkers will bounce back, and be stronger and better for it. The Battalion is currently under a microscope, and many people have been relieved or moved. I, although not involved, got moved as well.

Best wishes to Major K. as he soldiers on in a new role. He’s on target about the bad apples, and I fully expect the Army and the California National Guard to address the issues in question post-haste.

  • Happy First Blogiversary, Damian

What, did everybody on my blogroll start blogging on the same day?

First Chad, now Damian Brooks at Babbling Brooks is enjoying his first blogiversary. I recommend Babbling Brooks for a good look at Canadian politics from a conservative stance, as well as the state of the military of our neighbors to the north.

Congrats, Damian, and thanks for the fine reading.

  • Happy First Blogiversary, Chad

Feel free to pay a visit to In the Bullpen, where Chad Evans is reflecting on one year of blogging.

In fact, visit often, as In the Bullpen is consistently a fine source for news and opinion on Islamic terrorism. Chad has recently strengthened the site with a re-design and the addition of a second writer to help him carry the load.

Congrats, Chad, and keep up the good work.

  • A Bit of Advice, Fellow Bloggers

    Back up your work.

I had hoped to write up something tonight on this piece about the growing Chinese threat. While gathering my anticipated links, including internal ones, I managed to jack up and delete an old post. Luckily, I was able to delve through my pre-upgrade backup and salvage it but, to understate the matter, restoring a single post from a backup of a previous version sucked the life out of my night.

Luckily, as I don’t expect China to conquer Taiwan overnight, I can return to my anticipated blogging tomorrow. I just won’t be very timely. Then again, when am I very timely?

Oh yeah, since I’ve given up on this wasted night, go read Ace’s poetic ode to Scotty.

And thanks again, Mr. Doohan, for all I didn’t know about you.

  • Honoring the Blogroll: the MilBlogs

I haven’t done a tribute to my blogroll faves in quite some time. Today, I’d like to tip my hat to the top five sites currently on my blogroll whose content focuses exclusively or very heavily on the military. I should note that, while not qualifying for this little personal list, my blogroll is well stocked with veterans and current military personnel, all of which deserve your time.

    5. Grim’s Hall
    4. Chapomatic
    3. Blackfive
    2. Argghhh!!!

and, of course, the father of the MilBloggers:

    1. Mudville Gazette

I highly recommend starting each day over at the Gazette, if only for Mrs. Greyhawk’s Dawn Patrol round-up postings.

On a related note, longtime blogroll denizen Joan of Seven Inches of Sense has recently shifted focus to a group blog for a handful of military girlfriends and spouses with her Seven Inches of Service announcement:

I’ve been working on this little project and it’s time to let you all in on it.

For quite some time, a couple of years probably, I’ve belonged to a support group for girlfriends of deployed soldiers. It’s a hard life. And most people don’t understand it. So to surround yourself with a group of ladies who are living through the same purgatory you are is comforting, to say the very least.

Who else is going to understand when you tell them you’re so worried you’ve been checking the obituaries to make sure the man you love isn’t among the latest casualties and his family didn’t tell you? Who else will understand when you tell them that you passed a convoy of tanks on transport trucks and you got so swept up in the emotion of it that you drove ten miles past your exit? Who else will understand when you tell them that after two years of dating you’re nervous because you’re going on a date with your longtime boyfriend?

These are things that it sometimes seems as if people have a hard time wrapping their minds around unless they’ve been there. So, in order to hopefully shed some light on the women behind the men, and give a collective voice to the women themselves, I’m starting a new feature here at Seven Inches of Sense.

I’ve asked six other military girlfriends (one who is a wife now) from my support group, all in various stages of the military relationship (from the ended relationships to marriage), to join me here from time to time as we discuss life and our service in the silent ranks.

As any soldier knows, those in uniform are never the only ones sacrificing.
