  • Happy Blogiversary

Eric, a fellow Texan and Aggie, at the Fire Ant Gazette is celebrating his blog’s third-year mark. Hey, that’s old by blogosphere standards, and he insists on doing it unpaid. Go drop by and wish him well.

  • French Rioters Fire on Police, Wounding 10

While I was away travelling, the Islamic riots in the Paris suburbs expanded to the city’s interior and other parts of the country. Now, it seems that expansion is giving way to escalation.

In what has grown into a national crisis and continues to escalate, rioters in France fired on police officers during an 11th night of destruction, wounding 10 officers.

About 200 youths were throwing stones and other projectiles at police in Grigny, south of Paris, on Sunday, police said.

Some of the rioters then fired at officers with shotguns. Two of the 10 injured officers were seriously hurt.

The incident came just hours after French President Jacques Chirac made his first public address since the riots began. He said restoring order was “an absolute priority” as the violence reached central Paris for the first time.

“The law must have the last word,” Chirac said Sunday, pledging that security measures would be reinforced. Those sowing “violence or fear” will be “arrested, judged and punished.”

Chirac made the statement after a security meeting of his top ministers. He has come under pressure by opposition politicians who accuse him of failing to intervene publicly.

But police have already made hundreds of arrests, and rioters continue to ignore Chirac’s warnings as gangs of youths rampage the city.

On Sunday some business owners called on Chirac to summon the military to stamp out the riots and calm the city, before arsonists begin to attack buildings as well.

    […]

While the riots began in the suburbs outside Paris, Sunday was the first time the destruction reached into the heart of the city. Nationwide, police made 349 arrests.

The violence was originally concentrated in neighbourhoods with large immigrant populations.

However, the violence has spread out across the country to include Normandy in the west and southern cities on the Mediterranean such as Nice and Cannes.

“All these hoodlums see others setting fires and say they can do it, too,” said national police spokesman Patrick Hamon.

According to the article, an announcement of further security measures are expected in the next day or two from Chirac. True to his character to date, Chirac has been one for neither quick nor decisive reaction to the obvious expansionist Islamic problem. I guess points could be awarded for consistency.

I’m not necessarily trying to be smug about the matter — the growing problem of radicalism in the pockets of Islamic populations in many European countries is no secret. For the future of the continent, someone has to put their foot down, and that foot is not Jacques.

Meanwhile, just to plug a couple of members from my blogroll, I’ll be catching up on the weekend’s developments in France by perusing the coverage of the wonderfully, rationally hard-edged Ace of Spades and the link-heavy Gateway Pundit. I’d recommend y’all keep up with those two on a daily basis.

  • Riots Continue in France

Here’s a special hat tip for blog quote of the day to John Little at Blogs of War , who scored the following little snark:

Of course one can expect a few hiccups as France transitions to an Islamic state[.]

Priceless, yet sadly too close to the truth. John carries on his coverage as the riots stretch into yet another night.

  • Happy Blogroll Blogiversary

Again belated, but again not my fault. Lex at Neptunus Lex recently celebrated his second year with song (given a loose definition of song). Feel free to drop by one of my favorite MilBloggers and wish him the best.

  • Happy Blogroll Blogiversaries

Belated? You betcha, but that ain’t my fault.

JohnL at TexasBestGrok didn’t realize until today that his blog had turned two years old.

Meanwhile, Eric at Eric’s Grumbles Before the Grave seems to have overlooked his first blogiversary altogether. It must be confusion after his flight from Blogger to MuNuviana.

  • On the Road Again

Well, nothing tonight but a couple of links as I’m currently packing for a company get-away to San Antonio. Blogging this weekend will be unpredictable.

First and foremost, I’m spending my breaks from packing reading the latest posting from Michael Yon on the ground in Iraq, Gates of Fire. It’s lengthy and, so far and as expected, fascinating. I especially like this early observation:

Although the situation in Mosul is better, our troops still fight here every day. This may not be the war some folks had in mind a few years ago. But once the shooting starts, a plan is just a guess in a party dress.

I’d also like to point that the latest installment of the Life, Liberty, Property community‘s Carnival of Liberty is up over at Searchlight Crusade. Go read another fine collection of posts from a libertarian slant.

Lastly, I wanted to point y’all to a new blogger, the Gunn Nutt. I have to say that I love the “about me” verbage.

Flag-waiving, gun-toting, unabashed patriot. I love the Constitution, the Founding Fathers and all the members of the U.S. Armed Services. I hate Commies more than broccoli.

Commies, broccoli … close call. Broccoli hasn’t killed millions, but if gross was fatal ….

Also, pay attention to the Gunn Nutt’s banner — that tartan is Gunn Modern, and the badge is that of the clan Gunn. The motto Aut Pax Aut Bellum translates to “Either peace or war” and is fitting for the fighting history of the clan. I should say that I’ve grown more partial to the Gunn Ancient version of the tartan, but tastes may vary. I’m looking forward to the Nutt’s blogging next April 6.

  • Nothing Tonight but a Carnival

I’ve got the day off from work tomorrow, and I’m taking the night off from blogging tonight. I may tinker a little with the site later so, if you drop by and things look strange, just bear with me.

In the meantime, feel free to visit Owlish Mutterings for the latest Carnival of Liberty. This carnival showcases the latest selected efforts of the Life, Liberty, Property community.

If that’s not enough reading for you, I recommend visiting any of the fine blogs in my blogroll.

    Later, y’all.

  • Calif. Guard Story and Major K.

It looks like the investigations into some of the deployed California National Guard units, blogged about here last night, has had an impact on TCm blogroll member Major K.

There are many things that I have to post about, but this is the elephant in the room that I must get out of the way. We have apparently found evil in our midst. I cannot comment on the on going investigation save to say that I am disgusted by the actions of a few that have tarnished the good work of so many others. I am not involved in this situation, and for that I am thankful. Morale has taken quite a hit, but the NightStalkers will bounce back, and be stronger and better for it. The Battalion is currently under a microscope, and many people have been relieved or moved. I, although not involved, got moved as well.

Best wishes to Major K. as he soldiers on in a new role. He’s on target about the bad apples, and I fully expect the Army and the California National Guard to address the issues in question post-haste.
